How to read a printed payout figure

  1. Read the printed figure, not the estimator. An estimator's default answer is an illustration. A figure a broker prints as what companies have been paid, or as a guaranteed minimum, is the one worth comparing.
  2. Check what the figure is for. BuyMyDeadStartup prints what closed companies were paid; License Your Data prints a guaranteed minimum bid; DataDeals prints a range for what company data can be worth.
  3. Ask for the offer in writing. A stated range is not an offer. The buyer, the price and the fee belong on paper before records move.

The figures, as printed

The lowest stated figure among the publishers is $10,000 and the highest is $50,000. They are not the same kind of number: one is a guaranteed floor, one is a reported range, one is a typical outcome, so the middle figure says where the printed numbers sit, not what any one company will be paid.

Why most pages print nothing

Most buyers answer with an estimator or a call. That is a finding in itself: a company asking what its data is worth will, in most cases, have to say what it holds before anyone names a number.

Questions sellers ask

Is an estimator's answer a quote?
No. Maryah's page labels its own output an illustrative estimate and not an offer, which is why its figure is not counted here.
Where does the figure come from?
From the brokers' own pages, each quoted with the day it was read, and nothing worked out by us.
